Pac-10 Season Preview - Asu

My preseason pick for the third-place team in the Pac-10 is Arizona State. The Sun Devils came into things looking as if they would have two strong quarterbacks this season, and coach Dirk Koetter named Sam Keller as his starter. But, in a somewhat unprecedented move, Koetter got into a meeting with fifteen of his players, who convinced him that Rudy Carpenter would be a better pick at QB. As a result, Koetter changed his mind, and named Carpenter the starter.

Sam Keller, a little bit upset at the development (can’t imagine why), announced he was transferring to Nebraska. Keller walks into a situation at Nebraska where he will have his share of a quarterback battle, but that’s a story for another day. Koetter apparently thought that it would make sense to have one happy quarterback and a happy team than two kids who couldn’t split time with each other, and couldn’t have a healthy environment. I can see that, I guess. It’s a gutsy move, but more often than not, a two-quarterback rotation doesn’t really work, and a quarterback controversy can divide a team. After all, there’s only one football.

Arizona State has a wealth of weapons on offense. They have six capable running backs, one of whom is a redshirt this season. The RBs are defining their roles right now, just getting ready for the Pac-10 season. Don’t think that everyone doesn’t have a job, though. There are rock-toters on special

teams who take the opportunity to lay the lumber here and there (Keegan Herring). The Sun Devils also have an excellent WR in Rudy Burgess, who has battled injuries so far this season.

The Sun Devils have surprised me a little bit already this season. First, they let Northern Arizona stick around a lot longer than they should have, but that can happen in the first week of the season. Then, they pounded a solid Nevada team into submission, winning by 31 points. Their offense is splashy (remember what they did in giving USC a scare last season) and their defense is solid, including a secondary with a lot of competition.

Originally, I picked the Sun Devils third in the Pac-10. That was back before Cal laid an egg against Tennessee. Now, with the weapons they have on offense, and the fact that Dirk Koetter looks as if he has come into his own as a coach, I’ve got to say that this team is the second-best unit in the Pac-10. To be honest, this is a team that, on its best day, could beat the Trojans of USC. Of course, when you are locking it up with a team that just knows how to win, you need luck on your side. But the Trojans had better watch out on October 14 at the Coliseum.
